Letter to Robert Gould, 1864.

The collection consists of a letter from Colonel Charles H. Olmstead of the 1st Georgia Infantry Regiment to Robert Gould, Commissioner for Exchange of Prisoners, July 31, 1864. In the letter, Olmstead requests the exchange of Capt. John B. Dennis, held in Macon (Ga.), of the 7th Connecticut Infantry Regiment for Capt. A.F. Butler, held at Sandusky (Ohio), of the 8th Georgia Infantry. Olmstead expresses his regard for Dennis due to the treatment Olmstead received while a prisoner at Ft. Pulaski (1862) under Dennis' command. The letter also contains on the verso, notes from Generals Mercer and Hardee concurring with Olmstead's request.

Charles Hart Olmstead (1837-1926), of Savannah, Ga., was a Confederate Army officer and member of the 1st Georgia Infantry Regiment. Olmstead was adjutant of the 1st Georgia Volunteer Regiment and, under the command of Colonel A. R. Lawton, took part in the occupation of Fort Pulaski, Ga., at the mouth of the Savannah River. When Colonel Lawton was sent to Virginia as general, Olmstead was made colonel of the 1st Georgia Regiment and remained at Fort Pulaski until he was forced to surrender. Olm...
